Estimation by modelling

Material take off is the process of estimating the required amount of materials needed for construction. We provide estimation service for structural steel. Using Tekla as the main tool, we will create an accurate 3D model of your structure. The main connections are then implemented.

Our material take off model can export to Fabtrol, Fabsuite, and Excel, giving you a very accurate estimate of the steel, bolts, and welds. We also provide you with a 3D PDF model and a BIM sight model. Any problems we identify are highlighted. We can turn around a 1600 ton material take off model in 3 days.

Material Take off and Steel Estimation Process

This first step is providing us with a purchase order, architectural, and structural drawings. You must specify delivery dates. Sometimes we will not be able to meet your delivery dates, so it is important that you clearly specify the delivery time.

We convert the architectural and structural PDF files into Autocad files. The converted CAD files are inserted into Tekla model as a reference model.

All major connections are implemented. Bolt grades are not checked. We check material section and grade to make sure they match what is specified in the drawing. For members where no section is nominated, we put them as dummy members. Once modelling is completed, we export the Tekla model into 3D PDF and Tekla BIM Sight model. We do not provide the Tekla model as one of the deliverables.

On Screen Estimation

On screen estimation where we use PDF tools to estimate the steel. The process is carried out on the computer screen. There will be no steel model. The final submission will be the marked up pdf drawing and the estimate in Excel format.

Estimation on paper

In this process we print out all the drawings and use a combination of on screen, and conventional methods to estimate.
