Staircase Cladding -Tunnel Project | Melbourne

This is Challenging Metal Works Project by Tek1 for one our long standing clients in Melbourne

TEK1 is share our involvement in the West Gate Tunnel Project – specifically with Bridge #75 Veloway WD to Footscray Road. As part of this prestigious infrastructure development, we successfully detailed the steel staircase cladding, adding both functionality and visual appeal to the project.

    Engineering Precision

The cladding is securely fixed to the main steel structure of the staircase, requiring precise coordination between steel and aluminium detailing. Our team at TEK1 ensured that all fixing points were carefully detailed to accommodate the unique requirements of perforated cladding, maintaining structural integrity and ease of installation.

The aluminium cladding for the staircase not only adds to the project’s aesthetic value but also demonstrates our expertise in combining materials for functional and visually striking results.

  • From Model to Reality: Detailing Balustrading for a Foot Bridge Project

From Model to Reality: Detailing Balustrading for a Foot Bridge Project

As a steel detailer, nothing compares to the satisfaction of seeing your detailed model come to life. I recently had the opportunity to witness the fabrication of one of my detailing projects in Australia. Balustrading for Foot Bridge

The detailing was executed seamlessly, with no challenges for the fabricator or erectors. It was fulfilling to see the effort and attention to detail pay off in real-world application.

  • Mining Structures Chutes

This project was detailed a while before. However I am posting this now

We have detailed transfer structure, conveyors, Chutes, Vibrating Grizzlys on this particular projects. These Items are typical for mining projects. There is a fair bit of care required when it comes to bracing to avoid weld clash.

At Tek1, it is our standard practice to check all handrails , stairs, ramps ladder to relevant standard. We do not simply go by the Engineer Architect drawings. We check whether it will comply.

Actually, once can simply tell us, put a stair here, give us the heights and spacing available, we could detail a stair for you, which will comply to Australian standards (AS1657 or AS1428 as the case may be)

This video show cases a few elements of the mining structure.

  • Specifying Ferrule Bolts

Ferrule bolts do need nuts to be ordered.

If your bolt report has ferrule bolts, then you have to specify what is the Bolt Dia and Length of the Bolt dia. Also you must specify no nut required.

The other thing to note is that, You cannot give extra length. Your bolt length should be a bit less than the Thread in the ferrule + the washer + the material to be bolted.

If we nomintate extra length, then the Bolt will bottom out on the ferrule.

    Problems with Incorrect specifications.

    • Any thing like FEB in bolt report does not make any sense to our clients.
    • Unless we annotate nuts are not required, large number of nuts will be purchased
    • If we give extra length, the bolt cannot be used. Costing significant delays at site.

  • Steel to precast connections (Ferrule)

    Steel to precast connections (Ferrule)

Steel detailers play a crucial role in ensuring that connections between precast & steel are both practical and efficient. In this blog, I’ll share my experience with the challenges I faced in steel-to-precast connections.

    Design

The design specified two ferrules on both sides of a precast wall. However, following this design may leads to clash between the ferrules.

    The Proposed Solution

To address this, I suggested using a CHS (Circular Hollow Section) conduit. This approach would allow a single bolt to be used for both sides of the connection, ensuring proper alignment .(Providing ferrules at a different location will not be feasible as we do not have sufficient edge distance)

    The Outcome

The structural engineer approved the proposal but recommended an alternative solution: double-ended ferrules. The query is now with the builder to decide which method suits their construction process best.

    Key Takeaways

    • Understanding Precast Connections: Detailers should be aware of connection requirements and potential issues like concrete cover.
    • Collaboration is Key: Engaging with engineers and builders ensures practical solutions are implemented.
    • Flexibility Matters: Proposing alternatives opens the door to more efficient and cost-effective outcomes.

How this is going to work

Join our training course by self registering at www.training.tek1.com.au

You will be presented with our online training material with excercises and questionaire which you can complete at your own pace.

    Self Accreditation – Free

Self Accreditation is free. Once you complete all the training courses and answer all the questions correctly, You will be issued a certificate for whatever it is worth. The certificate will be a comptuer generated certificate your potential employer can view at training.tek1.com.au.

If you go through all the materials dilegently and answer all questions, complete the excercises properly, you will learn something which will be valuable for potential emplyer.

However, you can game the system.

    Paid Accreditation from Tek1

For this certificate, you basically do the free course. But our competent staff will interview you, test you, make sure you are worthy of a Tek1 Accreditation

There will be charges, which you will have to pay.

Paying the charges does not gaurantee accrediation.

    What are you paying for.

    • For our expert staff interviewing you and testing your knowledge of Tekla Software and steel detailing basics
    • To publish you details on training.tek1.com.au about your certificate.
    • To allow potential employers to verify the certificate. Employer might have to pay to access this information.
    • Payment does not gaurantee that you will pass. Payment is to interview you once. If you fail, another payment may be required to re test. Hence make sure you know things before you register for paid accrediation.

Tutor Assisted Paid Training – With Gaurantee of Employment for Candidates who have met our internal criterion

Author: RAJ (Arokiaraj Arputharaj), an expert in simplified structures for residential projects, also specializes in structural steel drafting.

Simple to fabricate and easy to install, is the mantra when it comes to structural steel for residential.

Residential projects run on a budget. When they do, cost saving detials are usually missed by the engineer and architect.

At Tek1, we see, check and recommend cost saving alternatives. 90% of the time our proposals are accepted saving cost to fabricator and builder.

Our simple philosophy is , if it complicated to detail, it will be more expensive for fabricator. Keep it simple.
