On which side of the plate should be the scribe should be? That decision could have a positive or negative our come on the quality of the part. Part could fail if the scribe line is on the ouside of the bend. The steel detailer has a part to play here.
When generating DXF files for laser cutting, bend lines are often represented as etching lines to indicate where the plate should be folded. Although these lines appear minor, the direction of the bend plays an important role.
If the plate is bent upward from the etched side, the material at the bend compresses, and the etched groove closes during bending. This generally does not create any quality issues.

However, if the plate is bent downward from the etched side, the etched groove expands as the material stretches. This expansion can lead to visible cracking along the bend line, especially on thicker plates or materials with limited ductility.


To avoid this problem, DXF files should always be prepared so that the etched bend lines correspond to upward bends. This simple practice improves fabrication quality, prevents material cracking, and minimizes costly rework.
