When to Provide HDG for Structural Steel

We should have a clear understanding of when HDG (Hot-Dip Galvanizing) is required for structural steel.

If the structural notes state that “exposed steel shall be treated with HDG,” then HDG should be provided for steel that is exposed to weather.

However, if the steel is located inside the building and is not exposed to weather, it should not be considered exposed steel. In such cases, the steel should be treated with primer or paint, as specified in the structural notes.

By correctly understanding the project specifications and applying the appropriate surface treatment, we can avoid unnecessary HDG costs. This will help us optimize the project cost and provide a cost-effective solution while meeting the client’s requirements.
